A Built In Bra Worth Knowing
A cotton rib tank with a synthetic shelf doing the support work.
Abercrombie's Bra-Free Rib Scoopneck Tank earns its B on the body alone: 95 percent cotton with 5 percent elastane, the small dose of stretch a ribbed tank needs to hold its shape. That cotton breathes and softens, and the stretch sits right at the line we will recommend. What you should know is that the bra-free part is not free of plastic. The built-in support uses a 100 percent polyester lining and a 100 percent polyurethane fill, both petroleum based, both sitting against your skin where the pads are. That does not change the grade, which we compute from the cotton-elastane body, but it is the trade you are making for skipping a separate bra. At 25 dollars it is fairly priced for the cotton; just go in knowing the support is synthetic, not cotton.
Good to know
- Machine wash cold with like colors. Cotton can shrink in heat, so keep the dryer low to protect the fit and the molded cups.
- The body is natural cotton, but the built-in bra is polyester lining over polyurethane fill, so the support layer is plastic against your skin.
- Fair value at 25 dollars for a cotton rib tank, as long as the no-bra convenience is what you are after.
Why it earns a B
- 95% natural fiber (95% cotton).
- Contains 5% elastane, within the 5% stretch tolerance.
The exact composition
We grade the body or shell, the fabric you actually wear. Synthetic linings or trims are shown here but do not change the grade.
