Cotton With a Little Give
An open-back tank that stays almost all cotton, with just enough stretch to move.
Lou and Grey makes this open-back tank from 97 percent cotton with 3 percent elastane, which is why it earns a B. The cotton does the real work here: it breathes, it softens with washing, and it keeps the tank from feeling like the slick poly tanks that fill this price range. The sliver of elastane is petroleum based, but at 3 percent it is just there to add a touch of stretch and recovery, not to pad out the fabric. At 21 dollars it is honestly priced for what you get, a near-pure cotton basic rather than a blend dressed up as one. Most labels would have cut the cotton with polyester to hit this number, and Loft did not.
Good to know
- It is machine washable, but wash cold and dry on low, since cotton this high can shrink with heat.
- The 3 percent elastane keeps its shape better than pure cotton, so expect a little stretch and recovery rather than a stiff hand.
- At 21 dollars, you are paying for the fabric, not extras, and the fabric is the part worth paying for.
Why it earns a B
- 97% natural fiber (97% cotton).
- Contains 3% elastane, within the 5% stretch tolerance.
