An Honest Striped Broadcloth Shirt
A button-down that is all cotton, the part most shirts cut corners on.
This is Uniqlo's striped broadcloth button-down, and the label is refreshingly short: 100 percent cotton, body and all. No polyester to keep the price down, no elastane pretending to be comfort. That earns it our top grade, an A, because there is nothing here but the natural fiber. Cotton breathes, takes a press well, and softens the more you wear it, which is exactly what you want from a crisp broadcloth shirt. At 49.9 dollars it is fairly priced for pure cotton; plenty of shirts at this number hide a synthetic blend, and this one does not. Honest fabric, no filler.
Good to know
- The care label says machine wash cold or dry clean. Cold washing is fine, but all-cotton can shrink with heat, so skip the hot dryer and let it air dry or tumble low.
- Broadcloth wrinkles, as woven cotton does, so expect to iron or steam it to keep that sharp button-down line.
- At 49.9 dollars you are paying for the fiber, not a fancy label, and pure cotton is the right place to spend it.
Why it earns an A
- 100% natural fiber (100% cotton) with no synthetics, elastane, or regenerated cellulose.
The exact composition
We grade the body or shell, the fabric you actually wear. Synthetic linings or trims are shown here but do not change the grade.
