A Striped Cotton Shirt Done Right
A crisp broadcloth shirt that is all cotton and nothing else.
This is the kind of basic we want more brands to make. Uniqlo's Broadcloth Shirt in the striped regular collar is 100 percent cotton, full stop, which is why it earns an A. Broadcloth gives you that smooth, slightly crisp hand that holds a press and works tucked or loose, and because there is no polyester hiding in the weave, it breathes the way a warm-weather shirt should. At 49 dollars and 90 cents it is not the cheapest cotton shirt on the rack, but you are paying for honest fabric and a proper button-down, not a blend dressed up to look like one. That is a fair trade.
Good to know
- The label says machine wash cold or dry clean, so cold water and low heat will keep the crispness and ward off shrinkage that all-cotton is prone to.
- Pure cotton wrinkles and creases, especially in a crisp broadcloth, so expect to iron it or wear the rumpled look on purpose.
- Around 50 dollars is mid-range for a cotton shirt, and here the money is going into the fabric and the construction, which is where we want it.
Why it earns an A
- 100% natural fiber (100% cotton) with no synthetics, elastane, or regenerated cellulose.
The exact composition
We grade the body or shell, the fabric you actually wear. Synthetic linings or trims are shown here but do not change the grade.
